The Best Designer Board Games

The Best Designer Board Games

Designer board games are something that is generally considered to have been started in Germany, and while sometimes referred to as German style board games, this title can be misleading. Designer board games have come from nearly every country and all have great success stories in the popularity they enjoy with fans. Many different Americans, for example, have produced vastly popular designer board games. A number of designer board games do come from Germany, however, but despite the intimidating nature of the titles, players should feel comfortable with any of these games. They often are similar to many games that players already know and love, but often present some form of twist or enhancement that can make them even more enjoyable!

Good designer board games all feature some sort of theme which unites the strategy and methods used within the game. Sometimes these themes can seem somewhat bizarre and unsuitable for a game, but that is also part of the charm of the designer game. Once such game, Bohnanza, is technically about bean farming, which causes many a player to raise an eyebrow. However, the real game deals with heavy negotiation and trading between players. By using different cards dealt from the deck, players must plant different bean crops, trade for certain bean crops, and eventually harvest the crops to gain money in return. The player who, at the end of the game, has the largest amount of money wins. While initially sounding a bit ridiculous, Bohnanza provides players with much enjoyment as the strategy needed in the game always changes based on the other players.

Tigris and Euphrates is another designer board game which enjoys much popularity with fans. Based on ancient civilizations, this game gives players the chance to act as neighboring dynasties which are clashing over this region. Players randomly select tiles from a bag and during the game, place these tiles in strategic positions around the board, gaining control of areas to expand their kingdoms. Different tiles stand for different aspects of the game and through careful placement, players can build and strengthen their domains in ways that will reap vast benefits. At the end of the game, players collect points based on the numbers and types of tiles that they have placed, and the player with the largest number of tiles is declared the winner of the game.

Scotland Yard is a designer game that pits one player against the others in a team. One player is designated as “Mr. X,” a fugitive from the law who is running around London, trying to avoid capture. The other players all form the law enforcement team trying to arrest him before a certain time limit has passed and Mr. X can roam free. The board is a map of London, marked with certain transportation routes and all of the stops along those routes. All players are forced to travel along these routes, with Mr. X trying to evade capture while the other players pursue. The twist is that only 3 forms of transportation are available and each one can only be used a certain number of times by the police team.

Much strategy and careful teamwork is required with these games, as with most designer board games. However, with the many different varieties and themes available, it is no wonder that they have become as popular as they are. Everyone should be able to find a game that suits their interests!

Board Games That Can Be Customized

Board Games That Can Be Customized

Everyone loves a good board game, one that brings back memories and nostalgia of the fun times spent playing them. These games are often used during quality time spent with family and friends and because of these, games can often hold a special place in the hearts of many. However, not many people realize that they can take this love of board games a step further and make one that has a more personal meaning. There are a number of kits available to the consumer which allows them to take the base of an already existing board game and adapt it to make it personal. These games are usually not that expensive and don’t often require much other than a little creativity to make a novelty that everyone will come to cherish.

One of the easiest adaptable and most popular customizable board games is a take off of Monopoly. Coming in a kit called Make-Your-Own-Opoly, this set allows players the chance to form a board based on a traditional Monopoly board, using only what the player themselves design. The set comes with a CD-ROM which gives the consumer all of the software needed to fully craft the cards needed for the game, along with the templates onto which these cards can be printed through a personal computer. The game does feature some differences, however, from the original version of Monopoly. Houses and hotels are not featured within game play, nor are railroads. The names of other features have been changed, such as Chance and Community Chest cards. These are now known as “Good News” or “Bad News.” Jail is now called “Fate” and “Free Parking” is “Roll Again.” These little differences aren’t enough to get in the way of a heavily enjoyable game, however, and the novelty of owning a game that a player designed themselves is enough to overcome any drawbacks that the few missing elements would have provided.

Citizens of the United Kingdom, however, have the opportunity to purchase their own official edition of Monopoly called “My Monopoly.” By operating through the official website, interested consumers can order their own edition that is customized right on the website. They have the opportunity to personalize all of the property spaces and the Chance and Community Chest cards. The rest of the board is the standard version of the game, but with an official seal, this personalized board game can become a great family heirloom.

The Game of Life also has an adaptation which can be personalized with little trouble. Often featured with weddings, graduations, and reunions, the game is often customized by all of the visitors to an event. Each visitor often crafts out one particular memory of the person or family being celebrated, which later becomes a space on the board. After all the visitors have left their particular memories, the board is designed, becoming fully playable on the second event. This version of the game is extremely well received, allowing people to make a very entertaining version of a keepsake, one that can be enjoyed over and over again, instead of simply sitting on a shelf somewhere. Fully interactive games are a great way to entertain and delight loved ones, and customizable board games are a unique way to do so.

Where can i get game boards for board games produced?

Question by Money: Where can i get game boards for board games produced?
I am hoping to get a business idea up and running as a small project, designing and selling a board game. Does anyone know any companies that would produce the game boards for me, or how i would go about making them myself?

Best answer:

Answer by Simulcrash
I am in a similar position (making a game anyway, if it is good I hope to sell it). For my board I am using the artistic abilities of myself (limited) and my friends (better). I will combine everything with something like photoshop and print out the images. I am then going to mount them on foam core board. My board consists of smaller pieces combining together (the same idea as settlers or zombies). This could work on a large board as well, but you would have to access to a large size printer. This would incur a cost, not really sure what it would be.

To summarize
Printed paper on foam core (attached with two sided tape) may work for you, if you are able to design the board yourself.

Where Did Board Games Originate?

Where Did Board Games Originate?

Board games are an invention that has been around much, much longer than the average person would probably expect. Most civilizations throughout history have had some form of board game within its culture, with relics of some board games being discovered before signs that the culture had even developed literacy skill. The oldest confirmed board game can be traced back to 3500 BC, to the predynastic era of Egypt. Senet, as it has been come to be called, translates to “the passing game.” The game had quite a popularity in Ancient Egypt, with remnants of Senet boards being found not only in the predynastic era, but also in First Dynasty burial sites, which date to around 3100 BC.

Paintings of Senet have been found on the walls of many Egyptian burial tombs, from the tomb of Merknara which dates to around 3300-2700 BC and the burial site of the Third Dynasty Hesy, who lived from 2686-2613 BC. By the time of the New Dynasty of 1567-1085 BC, Senet had come to be a game of grave importance to the Egyptians. It was believed that a good Senet player would be protected from harm by the gods and often, corpses would be buried with Senet boards as a means to aid in the dangerous journey to the afterlife. The Egyptian Book of the Dead makes references to Senet and its uses with the afterlife journey, proving its vast importance to their society.

Across the world, in China, the board game Go was being developed at the same time. The first known written reference to the game dates back to 548 BC, but legend has it that the game was begun by the Chinese Emperor Yao, who lived from 2337-2258 BC and had the game designed for his son. It has been theorized that the game was used by Chinese tribal warlords who used stones to map out attacking positions. There is even conjecture that the game originated out of a fortune telling device, but none of these can be accurately proven. Go was considered to be the game of the aristocracy and it slowly began to spread to Japan and Korea around the 5th Century AD.

Backgammon has traces of the original Senet game within it, but the first traces of its modern incarnation come from the 1st Century AD, where Ludus Duodecim Scriptorum redesigned the board into 2 rows of 12 points each. By the 6th Century, this game had come to be known as Alea, and by the Middle Ages, Alea was considered to be the most popular game. The name changed somewhat to be known as either “Alea” or “Backgammon.” This game, among others, were all called “Tabula,” which was a generic term that roughly meant the equivalent of “board game.”

Board games have been common through most of history, with each culture and civilization showing historic proof of their existence. However, board games seemed to experience a renaissance in the middle of the 20th Century, when the rise of the middle class provided both the time, money, and the desire for collections of them to become popular. Board games are still riding the wave of this popularity and, despite whatever might happen, can be assured to last long into the future in some form or another.
